Listening for the gist is a subskill of listening comprehension. As you listen for gist and then present your reaction, you're most likely paraphrasing. In this exercise you will do just that. As you listen for details and then present your reaction, you'll most likely be asked to recall names of people, places, objects or concepts; you can also be asked about numbers such as dates, measurements, quantities, percentages, frequency and length of duration; you may also be asked about what for, why and how something is done or made; occasionally you may be asked about items on a list or an ordered series. In general terms, this type of exercises focuses on facts more than on stories, narratives or arguments. Your skill lies in taking thorough notes quickly. Use a schematic ploy like drawing arrows to join related facts in a way that helps you remember logically the parts of the text you left out on purpose.
